A Writer's Ear

Depth-oriented psychoanalysis for reflective people who feel stuck in life, relationships, or creative work.

About

Writing & Creative Blocks

A writer, then an analyst

Before I became an analyst, I spent more than a decade as a writer, editor, and writing coach. The part I loved most was helping writers get past the obstacles standing between them and the work they wanted to create. Over time I came to see that any story a person is working on is, in some way, a story of themselves. Whatever shape it takes, it comes from somewhere deep and personal. Psychoanalysis let me help in more ways than just creatively, but the thread is the same: paying close attention to a person, listening for what's underneath, and helping them move past what's holding them back.

Creativity can mean many things. It might be an actual project, a novel you've been circling for years or a body of work that has stalled. But it can also be the sense that your own life has gone quiet or stuck, that you're going through the motions rather than living the way you mean to. A creative block and a life block often come from the same place, and both can ease in the same kind of work: slow, honest, and curious about what the stuckness is protecting.

We work relationally and in depth. Rather than managing a symptom from the surface, we trace it to its roots, paying attention to the patterns in your life, in your relationships, and in the room between us, so that change actually lasts. For many people that means meeting once, twice, or three times a week over a meaningful stretch of time. It is unhurried by design. That is what lets the deeper work take hold, and it is often where people start to meet themselves for the first time.

A few pieces from my writing life:

I see individuals and couples in person on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and online across New York and New Jersey. The best first step is a brief call to see if we're a good fit.

Any story you tell is, in some way, a story of yourself.
